UNIVERSITY students in the UK are refusing to say the word “woman” and its plural because they believe it’s “offensive” to include the word “man”.
Students of Goldsmiths, University of London and Kings College London are instead referring to females as “womxn”.
The Students Union at Goldsmiths University believe that using the word “womxn” is “inclusive” of all students, as it includes those to identify themselves as transgender.
Elsewhere in the city, societies including the “KCL Womxn in Physics” club at King’s College are also using the word, reported Daily Mail.
They have even taken to social media to promote the term, and advertised “womxn’s yoga” and “womxn’s events” for the last six weeks.
In fact, the last time the word “women” was used by Goldsmith Students Union’s Facebook was on October 12.
On Urban Dictionary, “womxn” is described as: “A spelling of ‘women’ that is a more inclusive, progressive term that not only sheds light on the prejudice, discrimination, and institutional barriers womxn have faced, but to also show that womxn are not the extension of men but their own free and separate entities.
“More intersectional than womyn because it includes trans-women and women of color.”
The term “womxn” has been used recently on other occasions.
Earlier this year, a feminist group sponsored by H&M used the term 15 times in an email, sparking major controversy.
Some black and transgender women were angry at the new-found term, and said they are “women” not “womxn”.
The Twitter world chimed in on the topic, creating a viral discussion of many mixed opinions.
Times reporter Lucy Bannerman tweeted: “You do accept #womxn is ridiculous, right? Who, other than men, doesn’t feel included by the word “woman”?
“Do you mean, all this time, you’ve been saying “women”, but thinking “white women”? That’s weird.
“P.S how do you say it in PR meetings? Woomksn? Wombskin? Womixen?”
A spokeswoman for the Goldmsmiths Student Union said: “Womxn is used to demonstrate our commitment to inclusiveness. No student has complained about its use.”
Journalist Rebecca Reid tweeted: “Trans women who already face enough hostility are held responsible for this pseduo woke erasure of the female experience, despite the fact they didn’t ask for it.”
